TO BE PERSONAL TRAINING EXETER
WELCOME TO
Thank you for visiting my website.

I offer mobile and outdoor personal training in Exeter, Taunton, Tiverton & the surrounding area. I also specialise in running coaching and sprint training.

Since 2011, I have conducted tens of thousands of personal training sessions in New Zealand (Christchurch) and the UK (Cambridge and Exeter).

I have the skills and knowledge to help you achieve your goals.
CREDIBILITY
There's a lot of mumbo-jumbo in the fitness industry. I stick to what's actually important, and I don't pedal snake oil (even if I could make money out of it).

Consistent and balanced training will deliver results. Hormone-vibration-jelly-mineral-inversion workouts won't.
TOTAL FITNESS
There are many reasons to keep fit, and looking better in your swimming gear is only one of them. I'm also concerned with your physical and mental health, performance and wellbeing.

You're welcome to take before and after photos, but I'm not too worried about them.
SENSIBLE NUTRITION
For the majority of us, focussing on the quality and quantity of food consumed will make a massive difference to health and body composition. This requires discipline and organisation, not gimmicks and fads. I'm not a dietician so drastic dietary interventions are outside my scope of practice.
SUSTAINABLE
There is skill in subtly adjusting workouts so that an individual's training is achievable, sustainable and doesn't impact negatively on their work and family life.
There isn't much skill in training people until they vomit and can't walk for 5 days.
I have conducted tens of thousands of personal training sessions since I founded To Be Personal Training in 2011.
I am an outdoor and mobile personal trainer. My sessions are always fun, functional and focused on your needs.

I have the skills and knowledge to help you achieve your goals.
Speed is a fundamental component of fitness that can be improved with expert coaching and comprehensive training programs.

I have experience coaching track and field athletes and sportsmen/women in all of the major field sports. My clients have ranged from children learning basic movement skills to adults representing their country.
There’s more to running than just pounding the pavement for mile after mile. Running drills, conditioning work and structured running programs will take your performance to another level.

Whether you are new to running or a seasoned racer, I can help you train more effectively, avoid injury and perform better.
Get fitter and healthier training at home with online video workouts.

All you need are a few simple pieces of equipment, a small amount of space and a good internet connection.

I will then guide you through warm ups, program workouts, workouts of the week and stretching routines.

"Tom provides a professional service and is great to work with. Training sessions are always varied and adapted to target personal goals."
"Tom is knowledgeable, passionate, and unlike many coaches out there, he takes the time to educate his clients. He doesn't just tell you what to do and bark orders, but rather he explains the reasoning behind things and I love that! He empowers you and encourages you to be aware and active in your own health. He promotes healthy weight loss."
"I've never had a personal trainer (in Exeter) before and it was a big step to engage one. I couldn't have found a better person than Tom. He is clearly knowledgeable and experienced, is organized and inspirational and is a very easy person to relate to. I've made big progress over the couple of months that I've been with Tom and would highly recommend him to others."
"Fantastic personal training (in Exeter & East Devon)... Great exercises aimed at the right level for me coupled with a great personality and sense of humour. I always look forward to our sessions! Keep up the good work! x"
"When I met Tom... I was only able to run 5km or so... and always had sore leg when I run more than 10km... because of my bad running style. Since then he corrected it every time we had training. One thing I love about Tom is that he always makes the training fun... Now I can run half marathon easily and I am training with Tom for full marathon now. If you are looking for a personal trainer (in Exeter)... he is the one."
"Tom is a fantastic trainer and really got me to look at my training and diet in straight forward way. It's often the small steps that you need help with to make the bigger steps and Tom knows exactly how to get you there. Thanks again Tom, keep up the good work!"

How long have you been a personal trainer in Exeter Exeter, Taunton, Tiverton & the surrounding area?I moved to Devon in February 2023 having lived in Cambridge from 2020. Prior to this, I lived in New Zealand for 9 years. I am now settled in Devon with my family for good!
-
How long have you been a personal trainer?I set up To Be Personal Training in 2011. Since then, I've conducted tens of thousands of sessions.
-
How much do you charge for Exeter personal training?Since 2020, I have charged £50 for regular personal trainer sessions. I add £5 for buddy training (up to 4 people) and irregular sessions.
-
Am I too unfit for personal training?I can almost guarantee that you won't be the least fit person I've ever trained. I have worked with people ranging from those who can barely walk around the block to ultra endurance athletes who have represented their country.

How many Exeter personal trainer sessions do I need per week?Never ask a personal trainer this! Many personal trainers will see this as an opportunity to sell you as many sessions per week as possible. In truth, the right number of personal trainer sessions varies from person to person depending on time, self-discipline, budget, level of fitness etc. I want to find a solution that works for you and I'm not pushy. I have trained clients 5 days per week, but most people wish to train 1-3 times per week. Generally, the more you train with a personal trainer, the better your results (which is fairly obvious). Whatever you decide, I create the best strategy for your circumstances.
-
For how long do people have personal trainer sessions with you?In the past, I have trained some clients multiple times per week for the better part of a decade. These people wanted exercise to become part of their routine and generally weren't striving for specific goals. Other people have specific goals (like running a half marathon) and so we train until the goal has been achieved.

Where could I have personal training in Exeter?A large number of my sessions are at people's homes. Some clients have home gyms and others have suitable outdoor space (driveways, patios, lawns etc.). I also take a lot of sessions in suitable outdoor spaces (public parks, beaches, hills etc.). For all outdoor sessions, it is important that we have suitable surfaces and sufficient light (particularly in the winter months). Many public parks have good street lighting, and I have conducted running sessions with headlamps. I can also bring portable lighting in necessary. There are also facilities with floodlighting that we can use (like Exeter Arena).

Do you take sessions in bad weather? There's no such thing as bad weather, just soft people (or is it bad clothing?). You can exercise in most weather and I only ever cancel when training (or driving to training) is unsafe (like extreme heat, snow, ice, very heavy rain). I also adapt sessions to weather conditions. Commonsense prevails: If it's cold, where more clothing. If it's hot, wear less and drink more. If it's raining, where a jacket. Working out in rain isn't usually an issue for clients because they're going to wash and get changed after their personal training sessions anyway. However, I've usually got another session to go to! I have been known to turn up to sessions in client's home gyms looking like a drowned rat.
